With the weather forecast predicting thunderstorms all week and the actual weather being polar opposite to what was being foreshadowed, the Nike EDGE Ultimate Camp in Duluth, Georgia was underway. The days were split into two sessions. The first session featured speed, agility, and strength training, followed by the second session that involved skills instruction, drills, and strategy, which was led by Chain Lightning and Ozone instructors. On Wednesday, the campers took part in a pool workout for active recovery and shoulder strength and stability.
The camp had a wide variety of special guests and speakers throughout the week. On Monday, Anthony Kelly, Denver Broncos’ Assistant Director of Pro Personnel, gave instruction on proper running form, backpedaling mechanics, and showed campers how to get in and out of a backpedal. The NexGen Tour, a collection of College Ultimate’s top 14 players and 1 international superstar, also made an appearance at EDGE Camp. The NexGen players sampled the EDGE workout for an hour and got to see what the campers were experiencing for the week. They were certainly impressed with the hard work that the EDGE campers had dedicated to becoming better Ultimate players. Certified Nutritionist Benjamin Sisic came out and talked to the kids about nutrition. Benjamin discussed how to properly fuel up before tournaments, what to eat during games, and how to recover after tournament play. He also went over various food myths and answered any questions that the campers had.
The camp was culminated by an awards banquet held on Friday. The campers finished the last bit of the EDGE workouts and spent the rest of the day participating in fun games alongside Chain and Ozone players. It was a long, hard, informative and exhilarating week and we look forward to next year!

From July 4-8, 2012, USA Ultimate and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation co-hosted the U.S. Open Ultimate Championships in Colorado Springs. The event celebrated “Character, Community, and Competition.” The event featured a tournament of top international club teams and an Ultimate convention for athletes, fans, and organizers from around the world.
EDGE Ultimate Director Pete Dreisbach traveled to the event to support signature clients Chain Lightning and Ozone, and also to share the EDGE Ultimate training program with people attending the convention. On the tournament side, Chain Lightning placed second after a close loss to Johnny Bravo in the finals, while Ozone finished in 5th place. In the Open Division, Chain Lightning was the winner of the team spirit award.
Jason Simpson and Emily Lloyd were both recipients of individual spirit awards.
On the convention side, Tim Morrill of Morrill Performance led a session on performance training. His presentation, “Maximizing Athletic Potential,” took place at the National Strength and Conditioning Association Headquarters. During this portion of the convention, Tim was gracious enough to allow Pete to speak to convention attendees and briefly explain how EDGE Ultimate is working with Chain Lightning and Ozone to improve performance and prevent injuries. Check out page 37 of the Fall Issue (Volume XXXIII, Issue Three) of the USA Ultimate magazine for a photo of Pete participating in the lifting portion of the presentation.
During the afternoons, Pete spent his time at the fields leading demos for anyone interested in trying out the EDGE Ultimate training equipment. The U.S. Open was an exciting opportunity to share the EDGE Ultimate training program with serious Ultimate players from all over the world. In the future, EDGE Ultimate hopes to play a larger role in the U.S. Open convention program.
During the week of June 11-16, 2012, EDGE Ultimate hosted the EDGE Ultimate Performance Training Camp in Duluth, GA. The event was the first camp to combine Ultimate skill and strategy instruction with professional-level speed and strength training.
The speed and strength instruction was based on the MORR training system (Movement-Overspeed-Resistance-Reaction) developed by Chip Smith of Competitive Edge Sports (CES). Pete Dreisbach, Certified Sports Performance Coach, was the director the speed and strength portions of the training camp. Campers were exposed to equipment and training techniques that are used by professional and Olympic athletes. On Monday and Wednesday, the training sessions focused on resistance training. On Tuesday and Friday, the campers participated in overspeed training. Thursday’s workout was a dynamic pool workout that served as a recovery day to help campers get their legs back after three difficult days of training. Every day of the camp featured weight training to teach campers how to get stronger, improve explosiveness, and prevent injury. The camp also featured presentations on workout planning and sports nutrition.
On the Ultimate side, Sam Chatterton-Kirchmeier (Sockeye, Chain Lightning) was the director of the Ultimate skill and strategy sessions. He was aided by an outstanding staff of instructors from Chain Lightning and Ozone. The Ultimate sessions covered cutting, throwing, catching, and defensive techniques. Instructors also shared insights on practice planning and in-game strategy. EDGE campers were filmed cutting and throwing and instructors reviewed the video to provide the campers with feedback on their form and technique. Chain Lightning captains also broke down game footage to teach campers how elite teams watch and analyze video.
With the exception of some Monday evening lightning storms, the camp went very smoothly. The event was a great success and was even featured on the local news:
Not only did participants get stronger, improve speed, increase explosiveness, and develop as Ultimate players, they also learned valuable tools that they can take with them and continue their development as athletes.
EDGE Ultimate would like to thank Chain Lightning and Ozone for working as instructors during the event. Thanks also to Spin Ultimate for sponsoring the event and for donating jerseys to all of the athletes on scholarship. A very special thanks to the AFDC, Chain Lighting, Andrea Lansford, Steven Blondeau, and the Mark Poole family for donating scholarship money to allow more young Ultimate players to attend this great event. EDGE Ultimate is very proud of the EDGE Ultimate Performance Training Camp and is looking forward to hosting more events in the future. Please check out the camp highlight video and contact EDGE Ultimate for more information on upcoming events.
